After an exciting season of college football, the two teams that will compete for the BCS National Championship have finally been announced. On Sunday evening, the undefeated and #1 ranked ACC Champion Florida State Seminoles learned that they will face the #2 ranked SEC Champion Auburn Tigers. The two programs will face off on January 6, 2014.
It has been a historic season for both Florida State and Auburn. After years of mediocrity, Florida State finally returned to prominence as they went 13-0 and dominated the ACC. They are looking to achieve their third undefeated season and claim their third National Title in the school’s history when they play Auburn.
After going just 3-9 last season, Auburn had a magical 2013 season. They went 12-1, and had exhilarating victories over Georgia, then #1 ranked and defending champs Alabama, and Missouri in the SEC Championship game. Some have even gone as far to say that this season has been divine for the Tigers.
Florida State and Auburn each have a set of Heisman hopefuls in quarterback Jameis Winston and running back Tre Mason, respectively. Winston has been widely regarded as the best player in college football, as he passed for nearly 4,000 yards and 38 touchdowns. Up until last week, Winston was the subject of a sexual assault investigation, but he was not formally brought up on charges. Winston is one of the six finalists for the Heisman and he is believed to be the favorite.
As for Mason, he had a great season of his own as he was the centerpiece of the nation’s most dominant running game. Mason ran for over 1,600 yards and 22 touchdowns this season, and he ran for 300 yards and four touchdowns alone in the SEC Championship game.
Auburn will look to extend the SEC’s National Title streak to eight in a row, but that streak was in serious jeopardy this past weekend. Auburn went in to the weekend ranked #3, but thanks to a loss by then #2 ranked Ohio State, they were able to make their way into the title picture. Auburn will be looking to win their fifth national title, and their first since 2010. But if Florida State has anything to say about it, they will look to put an end to the SEC’s dominance over college football, and they will look to win their first title since 1999.
