Lithuanian Honorary Consul, Mykola Zelenets, Killed by pro-Russian Rebels in Eastern Ukraine

A Lithuanian Honorary Consul, Mykola Zelenets, was kidnapped and killed in Lugansk, the stronghold of pro-Russian rebels in the east of Ukraine, said the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy Linas Linkevicius on his Twitter account. “I’ve learned with great sadness that the Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Lugansk, Mykola Zelenets, was kidnapped and brutally killed by the terrorists,” the minister said while in visit in Kiev.

Hundreds of people have been kidnapped by pro-Russian separatists since the beginning of the conflict in mid-April including journalists, pro-Ukrainian activists, priests, ordinary citizens and international observers. Amnesty International denounced in a report in July the hundreds of abductions committed mostly by armed separatists whose victims often are subjected to torture.
